Trinity Court Place
Apartments
Until
very recently, the housing options for Arkansas' developmentally disabled
adults were limited to institutions,
assisted-living complexes or staying at home with often elderly parents.
Now there is a another option, thanks to The Arc Arkansas.
In
September 1999, The Arc moved its first tenants into the historic Trinity
Courts Building at 2000 Main Street in Little Rock. Built in 1911, the
structure formerly housed one of America's first HMOs and later, a nursing
home. When the building was donated to The Arc, they decided to do
something different- develop a one-of-a-kind, independent-living facility
for the developmentally disabled.
In
November 1998, renovations began, and the building was transformed into a
22-unit, fully handicapped-accessible apartment complex for low-to
moderate-income disabled residents and their families.
The
33,000 sq.ft. complex features (17) one-bedroom, one bath and (5)
two-bedroom, two bath apartments. Each apartment has features designed for
a handicapped tenant and all are furnished with amenities. Also included
is a "community" room
where tenants can gather to watch TV., play board games, socialize or have
a potluck meal. The community room has full kitchen amenities. There is
also a gallery area where aspiring artists can highlight their work. A
classroom provides for special classes The Arc
periodically holds such as creative writing, storytelling and painting. A
beautiful veranda and courtyard that sits in the middle of the building,
provides a perfect area for picnics, socializing, volleyball, sun tanning
or BBQ'ing.
Special apartment features- lower peepholes, lower wall
cabinets, wider hallways and walkways, detachable under-sink cabinets,
toilet seat and bathtub grab bars, and a high-tech, keyless entry
system-help make the facility more user friendly for the disabled.
Trinity
Court Place Apartments is enabling many to fulfill their dream of
independent living. Call Mark Jernigan at (501) 377-7000 for application
